40 Mile Swim Begins Year 8:
Maya submitted this article to kick-off our 2019 Season:
Hello, 40 Mile Lap Swimmers, past, present, and future. I hope you all had a great Waiting-for-Venetian season. With the 2019 opening less than a month from now, I’ll bet that you’re wondering what this year’s prize is going to be.
Due to popular demand, this year we are bringing back the great beach towel we had a few years ago—with one important change: the color will be royal blue (or, as I like to call it, lane divider blue) instead of turquoise. Same large size, 30 x 70, and same weight and texture and embroidered with this year’s logo. And, all you have to do to receive one of these great towels is to swim a total of 40 or more miles during the swim season.

The 40 Mile Swim Challenge is open to all Venetian members of all ages. Those of you on swim team can count the laps you swim during swim team practice toward your total for the season. And, if you’re planning a trip this summer, remember that you may count up to 5 miles swam away from Venetian toward your total miles. As always, a notebook to record your mileage will be at the front desk and, if you made your goal in 2018, you’ll have a mileage sheet waiting for you in the book. Otherwise, please email me by May 1 and you’ll receive a free mile. Note my new email address: themayahahn@gmail.com.
This winter, Joanne Hauserman went though all the past notebooks and made a spreadsheet that includes everyone who ever attempted the 40 Mile Challenge. If you would like a copy, please email her at jthauserman@bellsouth.net. We hope to have it up on the Venetian website soon. Joanne has exceeded her 40 mile goal every year since the 40 Mile Swim Challenge’s inception and will be assisting with the Challenge this year.
Personally, I have BIG news. In February, I sold my house in Candler Park after 41.5 years of living in it. I turned right around and bought a condo in the Decatur Renaissance, right in the heart of downtown Decatur. I am on the top floor and face South, East, and West and I couldn’t be happier. I’m glad to be in the middle of things in Decatur and no more household chores mean more time swimming!
Future Events & Important Dates:
Saturday, May 4: Opening Day & New Member Orientation
Monday, May 13: VPCA Board meeting, 7 pm
