Grills & Fires
We’ve had two grill fires this season. One grill is “toast;” the other was able to be repaired. We are asking that members take a look at the grease-catch pan to see if it is full, which could lead to another fire. We are having the grills cleaned regularly and grease traps emptied, but could use the extra inspection by those using the grills. Ask the pool manager, a board member, or someone familiar with grills if you need help. We’ll follow up with more details, but wanted to get this notice out asap.
Luau – August 4th
Luau is this Saturday, August 4th. Food plates are available for $5.00 cash. We will have BBQ pork, some chicken, beans, corn, pineapple, and watermelon.
Festivities kick-off at 5:30.
40 Mile Swim Challenge Welcomes Youngest Swimmer
I’m happy to announce that, for the first time in the seven-year history of the 40 Mile Swim Challenge, a young swimmer, Jake Fjelstul, just 12 years old, has achieved the 40 mile goal. Jake has shown determination as well as stamina, swimming over 3 miles at a time to get to 40 before the end of July. With the rate he’s swimming, he’ll finish the season among the top ten Venetian swimmers. When you see him, please be sure to congratulate him; we’re all so proud of him.
Jake joins 10 other members who have already exceeded the 40 mile goal. They are**:
Ric Alembik
Kristen Allin
Marcia Borowski
Sam Brown
Janet Fath
Larry Nodine
Gabriel Ramirez
Jennie Richardson
Bill Sexson
Jessica Landisman Williams
Twenty three swimmers have completed 25-39 miles and are poised to complete 40 miles very soon. They are:
Blaine Herman | Lewis Amos |
Michael Leavey | Terry Chorba |
Jimmy Lockhart | James Coblin |
Jessica Kirkwood | John Duffield |
Juliet Mavromatis | Laura Fehrs |
Ken Nuttall | Tony Fiore |
Marnie Pittman | Scott Fridkin |
Linda Rathje | Steven Gyorffy |
Robin Rock | Maya Hahn |
Michael Simon | Kendall Hamilton |
Sara Markowitz | Joanne Hauserman |
Given all of August and September (including extended swim) remaining, another 25-30 people are in place to achieve or surpass 40 miles, given their rate of racking up the miles all summer so far.
As I’ve mentioned before, this year’s incentive is a special screen print done just for us by our former pool manager and one of Atlanta’s most talented young artists, Colm Jenkins. I’ve seen some of his preliminary ideas for the print and I can assure you that you will cherish it as your memory of the 2018 challenge. The print will be done on high quality paper and will be of a size that fits a ready-made frame.
So, get swimming, all you lappers. And, swim team kids, in Jake Fjelstul you have a role model to continue swimming after the competition ends. The 40 Mile Swim Challenge is open to all members of any age. You can swim with aids like fins, pull buoys, kickboards, or you can water walk your laps—whatever gets you from one end of the pool to the other. It’s fun and refreshing and there’s no age limit, so join us for the rest of the season and for next year.
**distances calculated July 30 at 1:00 pm.
