40-Mile Swim Challenge In Its Fifth Year; Here are Last Year’s Impressive Results!
Hey, Venetian swimmers, the 2016 season is nearly here, and we’re looking forward to the fifth year of the 40 Mile Swim Challenge. Last year, more than 100 people signed up for the challenge, and a record breaking 51 of them achieved or surpassed 40 miles during the swim season. You will be seeing a lot of the “swimming pool blue” beach towels around the pool this season.
Last year’s top swimmer was Jessica Landisman Williams, who swam an impressive 214 miles! You’ll see Jessica’s name on the plaque which will be displayed on the 40 Mile Swim bulletin board in the entry kiosk.
Figure 1 Jessica Landisman Williams, Venetian’s number one lap swimmer
Close behind her was Rick Alembik, who swam 133 miles—all without a single swim aid except his goggles and lap counter. The rest of the top five swimmers, last year, were:
- Laura Doonan, 122 miles
- Jennie Richardson, 105 miles
- Margaret Doonan Pierce, 104.25 miles
Totally, last year we swam 3093 miles. If we were to swim in a straight line, starting from 150 Scott Blvd., that would take us to some exotic places, beginning with crossing Baffin Bay between Etah and Neke, Greenland to the Northeast. Etah was a starting point of discovery expeditions to the North Pole and the landing site of the last migration of the Inuit from the Canadian Arctic. In the Southwest, we’d swim just about to Lima, Peru, or eastward from Decatur to Angra do Heroismo, an island in the Azores. To the Southeast, we made it to Ilha de Moraca, an ecological research station just 5 km off the coast of Brazil, and to the Northwest, we entered the Southeastern tip of Alaska near Ykutat.
Below is a photo of some more Venetian swimmers displaying last year’s incentive, a large and plush beach towel, embroidered with the 40 Mile Swim Challenge logo:

Great News for Venetian Music (and Podcast) Lovers
Did you see some swimmers wearing waterproof iPods while they swam last summer (or this past winter)? (They might even have been swimming and singing, like I do sometimes). If you felt a pang of envy and wished you had one, too, here’s the answer to your pang: Underwater Audio, http://www.underwateraudio.com, is offering Venetian swimmers a 10% discount, now through July 1, 2016, on their products.
I’ve been using my iPod, purchased through Underwater Audio, for quite a while and it’s really enhanced my swimming experience to swim to music. The ear buds came with a selection of ends so I could find the right ones for my ears and they never leak.
Underwater Audio’s customer service is just what you want in support—a caring human being who will help you right then and there actually answers the phone when you call during their business hours.
And, you don’t have to be a swimmer to want a waterproof iPod. It’s great for anyone who sweats while they work out, so, if you’re a runner, this could be for you. From their website, http://www.underwateraudio.com, “we fully test each waterproof iPod in salt, fresh and chlorinated water, so sweat on it, dunk it, swim with it, or surf with it! Each waterproof iPod passes submersion and control wheel integrity tests before we ship it to you.”
This is a special deal just for Venetian members and is good from now until July 1 only. You do NOT have to be a lap swimmer or sign up for the 40 Mile Swim Challenge to enjoy a waterproof ipod. Just go to their website, http://www.underwateraudio.com and, when ordering, use the coupon code 40mile.swim.challenge (remember the dots) to get the 10% discount. Again, while you’re at it, take a look at their other products; you might find several items you want.
Remember, this offer will expire July 1, 2016. See you in the pool!

Work Day — Saturday, April 23rd
Our spring Work Day is just over a month away! This is the day when we do the all-important preparations to get out facilities ready for the upcoming season, and it is a great social event. We need help with
- Lots of cleaning – the Bath Houses, the Snack Bar, the Office. Cleaning supplies are provided.
- Re-sealing the wooden deck (after making any needed repairs).
- Re-staining the picnic tables, benches and planters.
- Inspecting and repairing the climbing structure.
- Throwing out trash. (We rent a dumpster for the day and usually fill it.)
- Planting annuals, spreading pine straw.
- Cleaning the grills thoroughly.
- And much more…
The day begins at 8:00 a.m. with juice, coffee, bagels and donuts. Lunch will be served at noon. And you earn guest passes—one book of guest passes for every two hours worked per household. We will be working until about 5:00 p.m. In case of rain, the Work Day will be held on Sunday, April 24.
Hope to see you there! Many hands make light work!
Volunteers Still Needed to Help With New Member Party
The New Member Welcoming Party still needs volunteers to assist in providing items for this event. There is no requirement to attend the event, and all purchases will be reimbursed by Venetian. If you would be willing to purchase and drop off a few items, please let me know. Your efforts will be much appreciated.
