40 Mile Swim Challenge Starts Off With a Splash!
The 2016 edition of Venetian’s 40 Mile Swim Challenge is off to a great start. More than 82 members are participating and, thanks to the drought, the mileage is adding up. As of midday, June 23rd, Jessica Landisman Williams is, once again, leading the pack with a walloping 70 miles under her flippers. Following her bubble trail is Margaret Doonan Pierce with 65 miles.
Just 5 miles behind Margaret is the powerful Rick Alembik, at 60 miles—all swum without the aid of flippers, paddles, or body armor. And everyone’s favorite teacher and coach, Sam Brown, comes in fourth with 55 miles (or maybe just 55 yards?—Sam, you have your own way of record keeping). Rounding out the top five is another member of the Doonan family, Laura Doonan, who has completed 42 miles so far this season.
Others are racking up the miles and having great fun doing so. Participation isn’t limited by age or ability and as long as the drought keeps up, sunny days and warm temperatures make swimming a relief. Thanks to Swim Atlanta running the aerator each evening after the pool closes, the water is comfortable—not cold—and the pool is crystal clear and clean.
It’s not too late to join the 40 Mile Swim Challenge. Blank record keeping forms are in the back of the book at the front desk. If you start now, you can still make 40 miles by the end of September.
