Venetian eSplash 4.18.2015
Work Day and Opening Day Announcements; Events Committee Volunteers; By-Laws Amendment Clarification; Facilities Update, Work Day and New Furniture; 40-Mile Swim Challenge; Future Events
Next Saturday, April 25, is Work Day! See details below, and 2 weeks after that is Opening Day on May 9 and we will have new member orientation at 4pm!
Volunteers Needed for Events Committee
The events committee could use some help in organizing events for this pool season. In addition to July 4, Luau, and Low Country Boil, we have Friday Movie Nights in June and “Nights” in the Deep End. We need volunteers to help set up the screen and projector for Movie Nights. Please contact our Committee Chair, Jill Thompson, to help organize and execute these events. Contact Jill at events@venetianpools.org or 404-277-5234.
By-Laws Amendment Clarification
Some questions were raised about the By-Laws amendment reported in the last eSplash regarding pool privileges for employees of the Association adopted last year. The Board wants to clarify the purpose and meaning of this bylaw provision. The amendment is very limited and was adopted as an incentive to assist with the hiring and retention of personnel. This bylaw provision provides that an employee and his or her immediate family member (i.e., spouse and children) may use the pool during the season. The employee is not permitted to bring guests to the pool. Since most employees are single individuals, the provision has generally been used to allow employees to swim at the pool where they work.
Facilities Update and Work Day
Thanks to the work of Pat Solomon and Flip Hager all of our toilets – in the Men’s and Women’s bathrooms have been replaced with new, higher-grade equipment. We hope this means we will no longer have a problem with out of order and leaking toilets as we had in the past.
Also – in the next few weeks, the Dance Hall as well as the exterior trim and doors of our other three buildings will all have a fresh coat of paint if the rain holds off. The Work Day volunteers will be the first ones to get a look.
Work Day – Saturday, April 25 8 am – 4 pm
(Rain Date – Sunday, April 26)
We need lots of volunteers to help on our annual Work Day. If you have not been before, plan to join us – it is a fun time. There will coffee & refreshments in the morning and sandwiches and drinks at lunch time. Cleaning supplies will be provided. Here is what we need help with:
Cleaning – Lots of cleaning: The Men’s and Women’s Changing Rooms need to be thoroughly cleaned and mopped, as wells as the Snack Bar and the Dance Hall. We will have a group working in each area.
Re-staining of the deck and wooden trash containers.
Power washing and re-staining the picnic tables.
Landscaping – Trimming shrubs, planting annuals, removing ivy.
Trash removal – Old broken furniture and other trash goes into the dumpster.
Various repairs & maintenance – Cleaning out the deck drains, adjusting the fence gate, etc.
In addition to cleaning the existing chairs, lounge chairs, tables and umbrellas, we have purchased some new furniture and have some furniture being re-furbished for this season.
40-Mile Swim Challenge
Hello, swimmers. With the pool opening in less than a month, let’s hope these April Showers rain themselves out so we can have some sunny months for our 40 Mile Swim Challenge, 2015.
On chilly evenings this summer, you may notice a lot of people around the pool sporting bright royal blue hoodies emblazoned with the 40 Mile Swim logo. This was last year’s reward for achieving that most coveted status.
And, while you’re at it, take a look at our bulletin board in the entry kiosk. The 40 Mile Swim Challenge will have our own dedicated ¼ of the kiosk. There you’ll see our perpetual plaque engraved with the name and achievement of last year’s winner, Jessica Landisman Williams who swam an amazing 191 miles during 2015 the Venetian season. There will also be tips to help you achieve your miles and you can feel free to post notices relating to the 40 Mile Swim Challenge on that part of the kiosk.
And now, announcing the 40 Mile Swim Challenge Incentive Award for 2015: This year, when you achieve your 40 Miles, you will receive a big, plush, beach towel with the 40 Mile Swim Challenge logo on it. So, in 2016, we hope to see all the pool chairs draped in 40 Mile Swim towels :–).
The 40 Mile Swim challenge is open to all Venetian Pool Community Association members, young or old, beginner or pro. All you have to do is swim at least 40 miles during the swim season and you can even swim 5 of those miles away from Venetian, on vacation. You can do any stroke and you don’t even have to put your head under water if you don’t want to. Sign up begins May 1 and will be announced in an E Splash at that time.
See you in the lanes!
**Good idea to write your name inside your hoodie with a Sharpie so it doesn’t get confused with someone else’s at the pool.
