Family Game Night Tomorrow
Come to tomorrow’s Family Game Night (formerly known as Saturday Night Deep-End Event) from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.! Some have described these events as “the most community creating event at Venetian.” Camaraderie has been experienced by all ages, and everyone has had a tremendous amount of fun. The family games include Water Polo, Sharks & Minnows, and Marco Polo for younger children. The games are organized based on interest and age groups present. There will be at least 2 short lap lanes. The next one is August 3, in conjunction with the Luau.
The Luau and the Rescheduled Fourth—One Big Party
The rescheduled Fourth of July celebration will be held in conjunction with the Luau on August 3. The pool will open at 10 a.m. and the festivities will start early with the slide, soda dive, money dive, beer dive, hula hoop, etc. and continue into the evening with the pig roast, Family Game Night, and the band until 10 p.m. There will be 2 short lap lanes (with the addition of a 3rd if Colm deems necessary) from 10 a.m. – noon and from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. Look for further details on the website under the Events tab.
Lunch will be like our traditional Fourth potluck. If you wish to participate, bring a side/dessert and Venetian will supply the hot dogs. Those whose last names begins with A-I bring a flavorful veggie dish, with J-R bring a patriotic dessert, and with S-Z bring a colorful salad. Dinner will be the pig roast with a per plate fee as long as the food holds out.
Only the special Fourth guest passes may be used. They include the pig roast plate fee (as long as the food lasts). The usual guest passes or Waiting List passes may not be used. If you have purchased a July 4th guest pass, you may use it or request a refund from the Front Desk by Thursday, Aug. 1. Any tickets which are redeemed will be available to members at $25 per ticket with a limit of 4 per membership.
Design the 40 Mile Challenge Tee
Your original design can be the 2013 tee shirt for the 40 Mile Swim Challenge. This year, anyone who has already signed up for the 40 Mile Challenge may enter the competition for the tee shirt design. All submitted designs will be anonymously displayed and any 40 Mile Challenge participant (regardless if you will complete the challenge or not) can vote on them. All designs: 1) Must have no more than 4 colors, one of which is AQUA (swimming pool blue); 2) Must somehow indicate that the wearer swam 40 miles in 2013; 3) Cannot look like the Swim Team tee shirt. Submit your design via email (to mayahahn@att.net ) or snail mail (to Tee Shirt, 303 Candler Street, Atlanta GA 30307) before August 11. The only skill required is imagination!
So far, a total of 85 participants in the 40 Mile Swim Challenge have completed more than 1200 miles since May 11 in spite of the early chilly water temperatures and more rainy days than ever recorded in June and July. Jennie Richardson is leading the pack with a total of 68 miles completed as of July 18. Seven swimmers are already working on their second 80 miles. Now that our gloomy, rainy weather seems to be abating, those miles will be adding up quickly. See you in the lanes!
Nominations—The Sound of Silence
Nominations for the VPCA Board of Directors were opened last week and the response has been very quiet, to say the least. Please submit your nominations of yourself or others by leaving the completed Nominations for VPCA Board of Directors 2013 at the front desk, e-mailing it to Sophia Brothers Peterman, communications@venetianpools.org or sending it via snail mail to Sophia. Be sure that every person nominated has agreed to run. There are five open positions as John Dean (Programs and Activities), Cheryl Graves (President), Rob Katz (Treasurer, Ways and Means), Adam Levy (Personnel), and Sophia Brothers Peterman (Secretary, Communications) complete their terms. Blank forms are also at the Front Desk, and you may download the nominations form from the Voting Matters section under the Members Only tab (you have to be logged in). The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, August 2. Voting will be from Thursday, August 15, through Labor Day, Monday, September 2. The new Board members will officially take office during the Annual Meeting, Monday, September 9.
Ping Pong Thanks
A giant Venetian THANKS to the Stevens family for their generous donation of another ping pong table. That makes two ping pong tables in the Dance Hall for folks to enjoy.
Diving Lesson Update
Lifeguard and Bates College diver Porter Harrast has added diving lessons on Friday mornings, 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Sign up for individual days, a whole week, or just drop in (maximum 5 participants each day). Lessons are $25 per day, $100 per week. Questions: contact Porter.
Open Water Swim
Join Sam Brown and Joe Sands in the 2013 Lake Lure Olympiad Open Water Swim, Saturday, August 24, in Lake Lure, North Carolina, outside of Asheville. This event is open to all swimmers over age 18 and is divided into 5 year age groups for both men and women. By then, mountain lakes will be approaching swimmable temperatures—much warmer than Venetian Pools at the start of this swim season. Deadline for registration is August 22. For more information and to register, click on www.LakeLureOlympiad.com.
