Pool Open
The pool is open, although this morning’s early lap swim is still cancelled. The power is good, the chemicals are good, and sunshine is predicted all day.
Swim-a-thon for CURE Childhood Cancer This Saturday
Now is the time to donate or to register for this Saturday’s 2nd annual Swim-a-thon to benefit CURE Childhood Cancer. Go to http://www.firstgiving.com/curechildhoodcancer/venetian-for-cure or find it on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/#!/events/138577156278101/ Participants will be swimming from 9 a.m. – noon. It looks like the weather will be perfect, but just in case, the rain date is Saturday, June 23.
This event is in honor of our own Venetian, Katherine Athanassiades. Katherine, an almost 15 year-old, was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor in September, 2012, and underwent neurosurgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. She was a Poolshark for 10 years, has volunteered as a Junior Shark coach for the last three summers and is in her second year of being a Junior Guard. Last year the Swim-a-thon had 40 participants and raised over $9300 for CURE. Let’s see if we can match or surpass it!
Floatie Friday
Still no in-pool lights for a movie night, but come for the next best thing! This Friday, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. is Floatie Friday. Bring your favorite raft, ring, or buoyant thing and join us for a relaxing float. We will schedule make-up movies as soon as the in-pool lights are functional.
Highlights from the Board of Directors Meeting
The Board of Directors met last Monday. The Membership Committee presented its proposal for a by-law change regarding membership categories. Two Town Hall meetings will be held throughout the summer, and a vote by the membership is planned in August during the Board elections. It was also decided that people on the VPCA waiting list would not be able to take swim lessons at the pool.
Looking for a Few Good Board Members
It seems that summer has just begun, but elections for the VPCA Board of Directors will be here before you know it. Start thinking about whom you would like to nominate, including yourself. All skill sets are welcome. This year we will especially need someone with an accounting background.
40 Mile Swim Challenge Going Strong
More than 100 members of all ages have enrolled in the 40 Mile Swim Challenge. Can you believe it—some have already passed the half-way mark! Frank Andre has designed a great tee shirt for those meeting the challenge. The name of the member swimming the most miles will be engraved on a plaque prominently displayed at Venetian Pools. The next time you see that the lap lanes are full, know that some of those swimmers are swimming their way from Venetian Pools to Newnan.
Another Win!
It’s a hat trick! Congratulations to the Poolsharks for their win against Leslie Beach last Tuesday, their third win out of three meets! The next meet will be this Tuesday against Briarcliff at Venetian Pools. The pool will close at 4 p.m. for the meet. Dare we wish for four out of four?!?
Fourth of July Guest Passes
The Fourth of July celebration is a highlight of the Venetian Pool season. It is primarily for members, but a total of 25 Guest passes are available for $25 each. They may be purchased at the front desk on a first come, first served basis.
